Indie Spirit Award winner Susan Johnson and producers Suzanne Farwell and Susan Cartsonis are bringing Carrie Pilby to life.

We are adapting critically-acclaimed novel Carrie Pilby by Caren Lissner into a script from which we will make a wonderful, thought-provoking, ultimately uplifting film.

Carrie Pilby’s eponymous main character is a 19-year old genius who graduated from Harvard early and has no idea how to fit in, date or talk to people. She believes the majority of her hometown, New York City, to be sex-obsessed, immoral hypocrites. Despite her father’s “Big Lie” about meeting like individuals at college, she felt the same way about her college peers, and an affair with her college professor only left her more isolated and alone. Her therapist gives her a five-point plan to test her very black-and-white beliefs. Ultimately, Carrie faces the universal coming-of-age (at any age) question: Which tradeoffs, if any, are acceptable in order to “fit in”?

Carrie Pilby was among the first novels published by Harlequin Enterprises’s Red Dress Ink imprint in 2003, an imprint created primarily to take advantage of the then-burgeoning “chick lit” phenomenon that included humorous books about young women like Bridget Jones’ Diary. In its first incarnation, Carrie Pilby was noted in various newspaper articles as one of the smarter and more unique novels in the genre. It proved successful, selling more than 50,000 copies. After the chick-lit market became saturated, Harlequin stopped publishing novels under the Red Dress Ink imprint, but in 2010 Carrie Pilby was chosen as one of the first books to be re-released under their new Harlequin Teen line. The novel was also published in France on June 1, 2010 as one of the first four titles released under the Harlequin French imprint Darkiss, with subsequent adaptations proving successful in Italy, Mexico, England, Australia and Indonesia.
